Meals Times

Breakfast - all about nuts
Since I read about the benefits of nuts a few years back on internet, I have passionately consumed nuts. I have walnuts, almonds, brazil nuts, pekan nuts, macadamia nut, occasionally the pistachio nut. I was told that consume various nuts together would reap the benefits of different oils that are in the nuts. They are the omega oils, which are good for heart and our body. Besides omega oils, nuts have vitamin E as well.

I have taken as a habit to take nuts with my morning oatmeal breakfast. Nuts are cut into tiny pieces, with 2-3 small dried turkey figs. Sometimes I use the bigger version, which is also more fleshy for a change. Nowadays, I add a table spoonful of chia seeds, which contain omega oil as well to make it a nutrient laden breakfast. My yummy breakfast not only is tasty, it boost life energy as well.

I use almonds to go with my yogurt with raisin. Sometimes I add banana to the yogurt. They all make great taste. Banana with oatmeal is nice, too. I use banana before I turn to using nuts.

Lunch
I try to take only one meal of carbohydrate a day, be it brown rice with steam salmon fish, steam with cauliflower or tomatoes, or bread with otak (mackeral  fish and prawn). Sometimes, I have salad with fish or egg. Nutrients packed, simple and easy.

Dinner
Try not to eat much, else share with my daughter.

Tuition

7 Oct 2012

Though this is an important area to consider, however, with current situation, I need to hold on to my anxiety,  adopt an approach in wait and see attitude. The child must learn to study independently, tuition should help, instead of adding new burden to her. With new academic year starting with 9 subjects, and change of environment with new school and new friends - big adjustment and hence great stress - the most important thing is to allow time for my daughter to adjust herself.

My daughter is an intelligent girl - what she needs to learn most is to learn to study by herself - she needs to learn to work out a routine to study efficiently.

Mother can help by adjusting her own schedules, but what with age catching up and reflection growing slower by the days. Daughter has to take an active role in studying and to ensure she is doing well - the hooking onto the electronic gadgets won't do - safe keeping mode of all gadgets, only release them on a Friday for 1-2 hours, perhaps may help.

Tuition in  English should be in her own words, to help her attains an A*. Chinese Language, if any, is to enable her to learn and excel in the language which is to be used, besides for economic purposes, is also to learn her traditions and values.

Friends

5 Oct 2012

We make friends at various stages of life. I have new friends when I moved back to my own flats in 2008.

When I fetched my daughter to school then and adjourned my journey to the Botanic Garden, I joined an exercise group and I met up friend who later connected  me to other group - very relevant as far as my health was concerned. I learnt chi gong and that took me through many years.  Now I have taken to new life style of exercise daily in the morning - which somehow become quite indispensable. When I do brisk walking at the Pek Kio walking track, the 10 -20 regulars there had become my friends- unspoken lot of comrade. A simple greeting in the morning rejuvenate us.

P Mei is an interesting person. We can talk non-stop throughout the 3 km rounds we brisk walk together whenever she is not going to school to do her temp teaching. Things under the sun and from A- Z is our topics. I shared my joys and grievances with her. Likewise, she voiced her feelings on her vocation.

On reflections, my friends in primary schools are no longer to be had. My companions in secondary schools are no longer contactable unless great efforts are made. Other friends have their own personal life. Life are energy sagging nowadays. My brisk walking in the morning is a mean to replenish a great amount of oxygen that last me throughout the day. I feel lethargic if I do not carry out my routine.

I feel good in the walk as I feel I have connected to the nature. What more exercise in the morning with empty stomach reaps great benefits.

Tenants

5 Oct 2012

M and K were my my tenants when I moved back to my own flat in 2008. They both shared a room. To my great admiration, though they earn a lot owing to their profession, they lived a thrifty life. They stayed with me till K had to join her family who came to Singapore for  a better life. M's cousin, A, joined and shared room with her. Both also led thrifty life despite holding high level job here. M and A finally terminated their lease in end June 2012 for personal reasons and I appreciated that they had lived under same roof with me also during this very eventful period.

Investment (2)

Today Money page in Straits Times heading: Shareholders enjoy better cash payouts as many firms report higher profits, lower debt levels.

It goes on to report that more people are investing for growth and divident stocks to make their money works harder for them.

The writer Jonathan Kwok concluded by advising investors to study a company's balance sheet when deciding whether to invest. Numbers to look out for include a company's net cash positions, capital expenditure requirements, and the ratio of earnings to dividend.

I have recorded this passage so it can remind me on what to look out for, what to do, and how to do it: how to make our moneys work harder for us. In the past, we have worked so hard for the moneys, and now it's time for the moneys to work hard for us.

Debt

I quote from Dave Remsey: " Debt brings on enough risk to offset any advantage that could be gained through leverage of debt."

I cannot agree more on the saying above on debts. Throughout my growing up years, my parents worked hard for meagre pays to support us for a simply  lifestyle. We are lucky to grow up do not need to have the word 'debt' in our vocabulary. After growing up, I have the misfortune having to get a mortgage for my investment flats. When my property was fully paid up, I didn't want to calculate the actual sum I had put in on interests. I guessed the figure would make me depressing. Having fully paid off the mortage, I ventured into buying two more properties, using the deferred payment scheme, and progressive payment scheme respectively. I disposed off the properties when the market showed sign of recovering despite the fact that two banks had approved my two loan applications. Using the proceeds, I converted them into another small project which is within my mean and fully paid for it. I am therefore debt free. How relief it was.

Ya, there would be a lot of comments that I could have used the low interest rate to leverage my purcahses,
in the process, I could invest further. I could have made more income. However, the saying goes, what belongs to you, it is yours; what it doesn't belong to you, it is not yours. My tenure in properties investment had come to a station to stop. I had no regret in not going further to tax on myself to the extreme. I can relate to the above saying, thinking the stress you have put up living through not knowing the actual situations in the future.

More than one year had passed, and the worry and fear I had on rising of interest and other unwelcome scenario did not happen. But who knows, I could have escaped during the window period.

Anyhow, living in debt is never a good thing. We must live within our means. In that way, we sleep well and live a happy life.
